GROWING OLDER IS MANDATORY, GROWING UP IS OPTIONAL

The first day of school our professor introduced himself and challenged us to get to know someone we didn't already know.  I stood up to look around when a gentle hand touched my shoulder.  I turned around to find a wrinkled, little old lady beaming up at me with a smile that lit up her entire being.

She said, "Hi handsome.  My name is Rose.  I'm eighty-seven years old. Can I give you a hug?"
I laughed and enthusiastically responded, "Of course you may!" and she gave me a giant squeeze.  "Why are you in college at such a young, innocent age?" I asked.
She jokingly replied, "I'm here to meet a rich husband, get married, have a couple of children, and then retire and travel."
"No seriously," I asked.  I was curious what may have motivated her to be taking on this challenge at her age.
"I always dreamed of having a college education and now I'm getting one!" she told me.
After class we walked to the student union building and shared chocolate milkshake.  We became instant friends.  Every day for the next three months we would leave class together and talk nonstop.  I was always mesmerized listening to this "time machine" as she shared her wisdom and experience with me.

Over the course of the year, Rose became a campus icon and she easily made friends wherever she went.  She loved to dress up and she reveled in the attention bestowed upon her from the other students.  She was living it up.

At the end of the semester we invited Rose to speak at our football banquet. I'll never forget what she taught us.  She was introduced and stepped up to the podium.  As she began to deliver her prepared speech, she dropped her three by five cards on the floor.  Frustrated and a little embarrassed she leaned into the microphone and simply said, "I'm sorry I'm so jittery. I gave up beer for Lent and this whiskey is killing me!  I'll never get my speech back in order so let me just tell you what I know."
As we laughed she cleared her throat and began, "We do not stop playing because we are old; we grow old because we stop playing.  There are only four secrets to staying young, being happy and achieving success.  You have to laugh and find humor every day.  You've got to have a dream.  When you lose your dreams, you die.

We have so many people walking around who are dead and don't even know it! There is a huge difference between growing older and growing up.  If you are nineteen years old and lie in bed for one full year and don't do one productive thing, you will turn twenty years old.  If I am eighty-seven years old and stay in bed for a year and never do anything I will turn eighty-eight.  Anybody can grow older.  That doesn't take any talent or ability.  The idea is to grow up by always finding the opportunity in change.

Have no regrets.  The elderly usually don't have regrets for what we did, but rather for things we did not do.  The only people who fear death are those with regrets."  She concluded her speech by courageously singing "The Rose."  She challenged each of us to study the lyrics and live them out in our daily lives.

At the years end Rose finished the college degree she had begun all those years ago.  One week after graduation Rose died peacefully in her sleep.

Over two thousand college students attended her funeral in tribute to the wonderful woman who taught by example that it's never too late to be all you can possibly be.

Free Minds and Hearts at Work

At the beginning of the World Series of 1947, I experienced a completely new emotion, when the National Anthem was played. This time, I thought, it is being played for me, as much as for anyone else. This is organized major league baseball, and I am standing here with all the others; and everything that takes place includes me.
About a year later, I went to Atlanta, Georgia, to play in an exhibition game. On the field, for the first time in Atlanta, there were Negroes and whites. Other Negroes, besides me. And I thought: What I have always believed has come to be.
And what is it that I have always believed? First, that imperfections are human. But that wherever human beings were given room to breathe and time to think, those imperfections would disappear, no matter how slowly. I do not believe that we have found or even approached perfection. That is not necessarily in the scheme of human events. Handicaps, stumbling blocks, prejudices—all of these are imperfect. Yet, they have to be reckoned with because they are in the scheme of human events.
Whatever obstacles I found made me fight all the harder. But it would have been impossible for me to fight at all, except that I was sustained by the personal and deep-rooted belief that my fight had a chance. It had a chance because it took place in a free society. Not once was I forced to face and fight an immovable object. Not once was the situation so cast-iron rigid that I had no chance at all. Free minds and human hearts were at work all around me; and so there was the probability of improvement. I look at my children now, and know that I must still prepare them to meet obstacles and prejudices.
But I can tell them, too, that they will never face some of these prejudices because other people have gone before them. And to myself I can say that, because progress is unalterable, many of today’s dogmas will have vanished by the time they grow into adults. I can say to my children: There is a chance for you. No guarantee, but a chance.
And this chance has come to be, because there is nothing static with free people. There is no Middle Ages logic so strong that it can stop the human tide from flowing forward. I do not believe that every person, in every walk of life, can succeed in spite of any handicap. That would be perfection. But I do believe—and with every fiber in me—that what I was able to attain came to be because we put behind us (no matter how slowly) the dogmas of the past: to discover the truth of today; and perhaps find the greatness of tomorrow.
I believe in the human race. I believe in the warm heart. I believe in man’s integrity. I believe in the goodness of a free society. And I believe that the society can remain good only as long as we are willing to fight for it—and to fight against whatever imperfections may exist.
My fight was against the barriers that kept Negroes out of baseball. This was the area where I found imperfection, and where I was best able to fight. And I fought because I knew it was not doomed to be a losing fight. It couldn’t be a losing fight—not when it took place in a free society.
And; in the largest sense, I believe that what I did was done for me—that it was my faith in God that sustained me in my fight. And that what was done for me must and will be done for others.
In 1947, Jackie Robinson pioneered the integration of American professional athletics by becoming the first black player in Major League Baseball. During his 10 seasons with the Brooklyn Dodgers, he played on six World Series teams and was voted the National League's Most Valuable Player in 1949.

Some Things I've Learned.

Things I’ve Learned
26) When someone asks you a question you don't want to answer, smile and ask, "Why do you want to know?"
27) Remember that great love and great achievements involve great risk.
28) Call your mom.
29) Say "bless you" when you hear someone sneeze.
30) You never fail, if you remember the lesson you learned.
31) Don't let a little dispute injure a great friendship.

Yes, things I wish I knew when I was twenty.

What is your body saying to others?

I recently watched a video of a group of people talking about their different spiritual views. Very interesting, but as I watched I could not help but notice how each persons’ body language and how each, while listening and waiting their turn to speak, would either have their arms crossed or their facial expressions looked like they wanted to jump into the conversation with vengeance. I watched the video again with the sound off. I may have learned more about each of these people by their body language than by what they said. Your body language can reveal more about you than what you say.

Peace, bro!

Notes from a recent meditation given at Damascus Road Flint,Michigan
Most of my failings can be tied back to losing my peace, an easy task.
1) I have unmet expectations.
2) I have over-obligated myself
3) I am a people pleaser
4) I face difficult decisions with no clear answer
5) I am disordered
Check our more way to get back your peace: http://www.facebook.com/notes/damascus-road/keeping-your-peace/10150095153042829

The Peace symbol is a combination of the semaphore signals for the letters "N" and "D," standing for "nuclear disarmament". In semaphore the letter "N" is formed by a person holding two flags in an upside-down "V," and the letter "D" is formed by holding one flag pointed straight up and the other pointed straight down.Superimposing these two signs forms the shape of the centre of the peace symbol.  The original drawing by Gerald Holtom of the CND symbol is housed in the Peace Museum in Bradford, England.

Have some Peace in your life today!

I'm Addicted! Help Me!

Addictions (overeating, shopping, alcohol, drugs, sex, work, etc.) Keep us stuck, unable to do what’s good for us.

"Reality is for people who can’t handle drugs."
Lily Tomlin, Comedian.

Addictive behavior is tough to break. Here are a couple of things to remember about addictions and bad habits. It takes 21 days to create or break a habit. Don’t try to break a habit or addiction without first having something (good) to replace it with.

And lastly, I once was told a story about an Indian (The feathers on the head kind, not the dot on the forehead kind). He was a good, kindly, gentlemen. The kind of person that everyone could see was full of decency and wisdom. He was asked how he lived such a good life. He answered, “It’s like I have two wolves living inside of me, and one is black the other white. The black one is the wolf that carries my bad behavior; the white one carries my good. Everyday I wake up and feed only the white one.”

I have to admit that I haven't listen to this recording, but a friend of mine said that it helped him. There is real power in hearing the spoken word. It gets deep inside your head. Plus, it's easy to listen to while your driving or working-out.

Here’s a Prescription for Depression:

STOP THINKING DEPRESSING THOUGHTS! Okay, so maybe I’m not a doctor, but maybe, just maybe this prescription might work. Look, I understand that there can be some real physical reasons why you’re depressed. Chemical imbalances in the brain and all that but, you can help yourself out of it! Everybody feels depressed at one time or another, yes, even I do. Here is what I do; maybe it will help you too. First, shut-down for the day, don’t work, shut off the phone, the computer, don’t think, just shut down. Okay, now you’re ready. Then, either turn on or slip a DVD into your TV of your favorite comedy movie. While it’s starting up, fix yourself a nice, ice cold glass of fruit juice, fruit juice with NO ALCOHOL! Watch the movie and laugh. If you really want to do this right, get up in front of the TV and do some stretching exercise.  Now, here’s the tricky part, when the movie comes to its slow part, like the obligatory romance scene, as loud as your can, yelp! Yes, YELP! Let all the bad stuff come out of you with the yelp. Sure, your neighbors might think your crazy, but your not! Just let it go!

Get this book if you've been feeling depressed! It works every-time!
