When needs become our wants and wants become our needs.

So, I need a house and by some miraculous events, even in this bad economy and my credit score, I get one! My need has been fulfilled. Yippy!

Opps, now I need a lawn mower to cut the grass. So, I go to the hardware store to fill that need, but once there I find lots and lots off different kinds of mowers to chose from with lots and lots of different prices…. But, I want a mower with auto-drive wheels and is self mulching so I can save time and energy not working on the lawn. Great! I got one that does it all, sure, it cost me more, but think of the savings in time I’ve created!

Oops, now I need some shrubbery to make the front of the house look good. Same story; lots of different kinds, prices, etc…. but I want the ones that make my place look good! Course they're the most expensive ones, but I buy them anyways.

Oops, now I have to spend lots of time and energy planting and caring for my new plants, plus cutting the lawn, keeping the mower full of gas and in good working order, etc, etc….Oh, well.

During all this time, energy, and money I’ve been spending on my miracle house, there’s a young boy living in a urban community of poverty right here in the city I live in. His parents are a mess; they can’t keep food on the table or a roof over their families’ head. The neighbors are all in the same shape, poor of finances and of spirit. He is too young to see that he too doesn’t have to live that same future. He’s to young, to even understand that what he needs is the chance to see the world in a different light. He knows there is some kind of empty feeling inside him but he can’t figure out what it is.

I know what he needs, and it isn’t just a new house, mower or gorgeous shrubbery, it’s the chance to feel accepted and cared about. But what can I do about it? I’ve got troubles of my own! Doesn’t he understand how much time it takes me to pray for ways to make money so that I can have all my own wants and needs met?!

Feeling guilty? I am!

Simple Times Farm

CHAMPS is designed to inspire inner-city children to love a purposeful and significant life.
Organized around practical skills, foundational character, and love for God, this camp provides children with a chance for change.

Days are invested in riding, agricultural science, working with animals and gardening.  Our staff are selected specifically for their passion for young people. Whether you are sending your own child, or sponsoring a deserving youth, it is hard to imagine a better investment.

If you want to help fund CHAMP, please follow this link; http://www.simpletimesfarm.com/store/630 or come out and visit the farm!

Maybe I can cut back on what I spend on shrubberies so I can sponsor just one of these kids. Shoot, I hate working on the lawn anyways.

Simple Times Farm does not sponsor this blog; I have just used it as and example of one of the many organizations available for us to help fulfill the NEEDS of the children within our community.

When you say things in anger, they leave a scar.

NAIL IN THE FENCE
There once was a little boy who had a bad temper. His Father gave him a bag of nails and told him that every time he lost his temper, he must hammer a nail into the back of the fence.

The first day the boy had driven 37 nails into the fence. Over the
next few weeks, as he learned to control his anger, the number of nails hammered daily gradually dwindled down. He discovered it was easier to hold  his temper than to drive those nails into the fence. Finally the day came when the boy didn't lose his temper at all.

He told his father about it and the father suggested that the boy now pull out one nail for each day that he was able to hold his temper. The days passed and the young boy was finally able to tell his father that all the nails were gone. The father took his son by the hand and led him to the fence. He said, "You have done well, my son, but look at the holes in the fence. The fence will never be the same.

When you say things in anger, they leave a scar just like this one. You can put a knife in a man and draw it out. It won't matter how many times you say I'm sorry, the wound is still there." A verbal wound is as bad as a physical one."

Friends are very rare jewels, indeed. They make you smile and encourage you to succeed. They lend an ear, they share words of praise and they always want to open their hearts to us."

Free Minds and Hearts at Work

At the beginning of the World Series of 1947, I experienced a completely new emotion, when the National Anthem was played. This time, I thought, it is being played for me, as much as for anyone else. This is organized major league baseball, and I am standing here with all the others; and everything that takes place includes me.
About a year later, I went to Atlanta, Georgia, to play in an exhibition game. On the field, for the first time in Atlanta, there were Negroes and whites. Other Negroes, besides me. And I thought: What I have always believed has come to be.
And what is it that I have always believed? First, that imperfections are human. But that wherever human beings were given room to breathe and time to think, those imperfections would disappear, no matter how slowly. I do not believe that we have found or even approached perfection. That is not necessarily in the scheme of human events. Handicaps, stumbling blocks, prejudices—all of these are imperfect. Yet, they have to be reckoned with because they are in the scheme of human events.
Whatever obstacles I found made me fight all the harder. But it would have been impossible for me to fight at all, except that I was sustained by the personal and deep-rooted belief that my fight had a chance. It had a chance because it took place in a free society. Not once was I forced to face and fight an immovable object. Not once was the situation so cast-iron rigid that I had no chance at all. Free minds and human hearts were at work all around me; and so there was the probability of improvement. I look at my children now, and know that I must still prepare them to meet obstacles and prejudices.
But I can tell them, too, that they will never face some of these prejudices because other people have gone before them. And to myself I can say that, because progress is unalterable, many of today’s dogmas will have vanished by the time they grow into adults. I can say to my children: There is a chance for you. No guarantee, but a chance.
And this chance has come to be, because there is nothing static with free people. There is no Middle Ages logic so strong that it can stop the human tide from flowing forward. I do not believe that every person, in every walk of life, can succeed in spite of any handicap. That would be perfection. But I do believe—and with every fiber in me—that what I was able to attain came to be because we put behind us (no matter how slowly) the dogmas of the past: to discover the truth of today; and perhaps find the greatness of tomorrow.
I believe in the human race. I believe in the warm heart. I believe in man’s integrity. I believe in the goodness of a free society. And I believe that the society can remain good only as long as we are willing to fight for it—and to fight against whatever imperfections may exist.
My fight was against the barriers that kept Negroes out of baseball. This was the area where I found imperfection, and where I was best able to fight. And I fought because I knew it was not doomed to be a losing fight. It couldn’t be a losing fight—not when it took place in a free society.
And; in the largest sense, I believe that what I did was done for me—that it was my faith in God that sustained me in my fight. And that what was done for me must and will be done for others.
In 1947, Jackie Robinson pioneered the integration of American professional athletics by becoming the first black player in Major League Baseball. During his 10 seasons with the Brooklyn Dodgers, he played on six World Series teams and was voted the National League's Most Valuable Player in 1949.

Don't Celebrate Valentine's Day.

I know this couple who don't celebrate Valentine's Day.

These happily married people--call them Nick and Nora.
Nick and Nora laugh about not celebrating Valentine's Day; it's sort of a private joke.

What they do is treat each other well during the year. They go places, enjoy each others' company, and even buy the occasional bouquet of flowers. Occasionally one does the others' chore, simply to be nice. When one has a cold, the other makes soup. They notice when the other one has a new haircut or pair of shoes. They point out interesting magazine articles the other probably wouldn't see.

So what they do on Valentine's Day is pretty much what they do on other days.

Editor: So maybe Valentine's Day was just created as a Hallmark Moment! Or, that it's a day that reminds us how crappy we've treated each other the other 364 days of the year.

How Did I Get So Fat!

1. You're Following Bad Advice

Sometimes the government goofs. In the late 1970s, the United States began advocating a high-carbohydrate, low-fat diet. In the early 1970s, the average daily energy intake was 2,450 calories. By the year 2000, that number had risen to 2,618. Almost all of those extra calories came from carbohydrates, according to the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey.

2. You Eat Fat-Free Foods
Warning: Low-fat foods may make you fat. Cornell University researchers reported that when overweight men and women were told they were eating low-fat M&Ms, they consumed 47 percent more calories than those who were given regular M&Ms (the M&Ms were actually all the same). On average, low-fat foods contain 59 percent less fat, but only 15 percent fewer calories than full-fat products.

3. You (Still) Don't Eat Breakfast
Sure, you've heard this one before. But it's important: Researchers at the University of Massachusetts found that people who don't eat breakfast are nearly five times more likely to be obese than those who make it an everyday habit.

4. You're Eating Too Much Sugar
According to a USDA survey, an average American eats 82 grams of added sugar every day. That's almost 20 teaspoons, which contribute an empty 317 calories.

5. You Don't Lift Weights
In a study at Ball State University, scientists put overweight men on a 1,500-calorie-a-day diet, and divided them into three groups -- one that didn't exercise, another that performed aerobic exercise three days a week, and a third that did both aerobic exercise and weight training. Each group lost almost the same amount of weight -- about 21 pounds. But the lifters shed 5 more pounds of fat than those who didn't pump iron. Why? Their 21-pound weight loss was almost pure fat, while the other two groups lost just 15 pounds of lard, along with several pounds of muscle.

The Mayo Clinic Diet: Eat well, enjoy life, lose weight.

Soul mates, true love, love at first sight. What do you think about things like this?

I guess I believe the line Tom Cruise used in the movie “Toby Mcguire” was right, His character says, “I love you. You... you complete me.”  We all have some missing pieces in our character that we want to have completed. True love is finding the person that you can mesh the areas you’re both interested in and then learning how their strengths fill your areas of weaknesses thereby, completing you both. Love at first sight, yup, I believe in it. Sure, I’ve heard of people that when they first meet, hated each other, only to fall in love later. That’s because the emotion of love and hate are both cut from the same cloth. You see, when you meet someone for the first time that you don’t like, it’s usually because you are seeing in them the very weaknesses you hate to see in yourself. I believe in love at first sight, I believe that physical attraction and spiritual connection can me made in an instant. I also believe that you should take action to investigate its degree of merit. (Unless your married, then it’s most likely just indigestion)  It’s like the great romantic Ronal Reagan once said; “trust your feelings, but verify.”

This might just make a good Valentines' Day Gift.

Walk Like an Egyptian!

The ancient Egyptian had the idea that when you die you meet your relatives and they ask you two questions.
Have you had joy in your life?
Have you brought joy to others?

The many achievements of the ancient Egyptians include the quarrying, surveying and construction techniques that facilitated the building of monumental pyramids, temples, andobelisks; a system of mathematics, a practical and effective system of medicine, irrigation systems and agricultural production techniques, the first known ships,[6] Egyptian faienceand glass technology, new forms of literature, and the earliest known peace treaty

I'm Addicted! Help Me!

Addictions (overeating, shopping, alcohol, drugs, sex, work, etc.) Keep us stuck, unable to do what’s good for us.

"Reality is for people who can’t handle drugs."
Lily Tomlin, Comedian.

Addictive behavior is tough to break. Here are a couple of things to remember about addictions and bad habits. It takes 21 days to create or break a habit. Don’t try to break a habit or addiction without first having something (good) to replace it with.

And lastly, I once was told a story about an Indian (The feathers on the head kind, not the dot on the forehead kind). He was a good, kindly, gentlemen. The kind of person that everyone could see was full of decency and wisdom. He was asked how he lived such a good life. He answered, “It’s like I have two wolves living inside of me, and one is black the other white. The black one is the wolf that carries my bad behavior; the white one carries my good. Everyday I wake up and feed only the white one.”

I have to admit that I haven't listen to this recording, but a friend of mine said that it helped him. There is real power in hearing the spoken word. It gets deep inside your head. Plus, it's easy to listen to while your driving or working-out.
